In The Methods and Skills of History, Furay and Salevouris identify two additional uses of history. By exposing us to the “foreign country of the past” (and to actual foreign cultures of today), history can help us develop tolerance and open-mindedness and “perhaps, rid ourselves of some of our inherent cultural provincialism.” Furay and Salevouris also note that “Historical knowledge is extremely valuable in the pursuit of other disciplines – literature, art, religion, political science, sociology, and economics.”
